Midterm 1 (Part 2)

Prewriting Ideas

My Idea's Main Take-Away's:
  • Persona of Ishmael is revealed and developed through Melville's structure of Moby Dick.
  • Ishmael's persona embodies digital culture
    • Imitates various mediums available online

I'd love constructive feedback and/or ideas!

  1. I think this idea is really interesting, that each of the different aspects of the novel can be tied to a different resource that is available to us, or to each way to use the digital world. However, this can get pretty broad and may turn into simply a list of this and that. You mentioned that Ishmael's persona is revealed and developed through the structure of the novel, I think that this can be used to focus the other ideas by talking about how each of the different ways to use the digital world can or can't help us develop our own personas. That is similar to Danielle's post, but maybe one idea is that you could talk about how the map of Ishmael's persona can help us to find a way to develop our own personas in the digital world. Hopefully that makes sense, or creates some new ideas for you!

  2. I agree that "Ishmael's persona embodies digital culture" is very broad. Do you have a more specific example? Is there a specific point you want to make?

  3. Maybe you could narrow your topic down by focusing on how the form that Ishmael's storytelling takes reveals specific aspects of his character. You could choose a couple of specific storytelling modes and character traits, then tie those to digital culture. I feel like you should be okay as long as you make sure to focus on specific examples and are able to explain why this idea is important.

  4. Thanks for the feedback! I realize now that I threw out a bunch of ideas that gave off a broad topic for my paper. I have decided to use the idea of Ishmael as a curator to link Moby Dick to the digital world as I analyze Melville's structure and content within the book.

  5. Hey! I just remembered what we were talking about in class the other day (talking about how Moby Dick isn't really scientifically correct) and I found this really cool article you might like. I don't know if you've already finished your paper, but I figure I might as well put it here anyway :) http://lfla.org/mobydick/?page_id=920
